"Pa-Tone"

My family has always enjoyed popcorn. I have early memories of waiting impatiently for our snack as I listened to the oil crackle, the kernels explode and the pot scraping back and forth across the eye of the stove. I always hoped Mom would accidentally put in too many kernels because I loved it when the pot would fill up so high that the lid was pushed up on a mountain of white popcorn.

My mom and my dad still enjoy popcorn regularly. They snack on it most every Sunday night after church and sometimes pop some up on a weeknight or when friends are visiting. So when Mom came across this ridiculously enormous bag of popcorn but I'm sure she thought it was a Great Deal. I don't know where she found it or who helped her load it into her car but somehow she managed to bring home fifty pounds of popcorn kernels.

I need to ask her how long it took to begin to realize the number of years it might take to consume fifty pounds of popcorn kernels.

All that to say, I am the now proud owner of approximately twenty pounds of un-popped popcorn. And as much as we enjoy a bowl of popcorn every now and then, there is no way we're going to polish off that supply any time soon. So we've found another great use for popcorn kernels.

Some might call this something fancy like "sensory development". But I just know that pulling out a big tub of popcorn is a good way for me to distract a cranky toddler while I'm trying to finish dinner. Bennett enjoys scooping and dumping the kernels from one container to another.

Sure, he doesn't have perfect aim and we usually have to sweep a little after he is finished playing, but it is totally worth it for an uninterrupted ten or fifteen minutes. And it's not like we're going to exhaust the supply any time soon. Yaknowwhaddamean?

A couple of weeks ago I decided to show my little man what those nifty little seeds can turn into. From his perch on my hip he watched through the glass lid as the kernals began to pop. He found it quite hilarious. "Pop! Pop! Woohoo!"

And we both enjoyed the "pa-tone" very much. Yum!

Not Exactly What I'd Originally Imagined...But Wonderful Just The Same

When we moved into this house one thing I was excited about was the big ol' garden tub in our master bath. I pictured myself soaking away with a good book, bubbles up to my ears, candles lit, soothing melodies playing softly in the background.

Take a moment to envision that with me. Ahhh...isn't it lovely?

I think that serene scenario has played out all of two times. And (after waiting an hour and running 2,000 gallons of water to fill the tub) those two baths were quite lovely, without question ! But I doubt those rare occasions make up for the amount of time required to keep the darn thing clean. It is so unfair that stuff gets dirty even when not being used. And how gross is a dusty bath tub? Yuck.

Anyway, all this to say the neglected tub is finally being put to use. We've discovered we can put a few inches of water in and get two kiddos cleaned with no screaming and no tears. At least until it is time to get out. (Yes, this does require a parent to get in also.)

And, as a bonus, I found this little corner to have some of the best natural light in the house, making for some sweet nekkid baby pictures. Love it!

And just because it makes me laugh, a picture of Bennett taking his "bike" for a spin after bath time.

Already?!?

The other day I went to put Dayton into her sleeper for the night and discovered my sweet, chunky girl is outgrowing some 0-3 month clothes!

She seemed almost as distressed by this news as her mommy felt. Or maybe that look should be interpreted as, "come on, ma, quit taking pictures and get me something that fits already."

Romance the Parker Way

Jeff and I did indeed celebrate Valentine's Day in our own special way. With two little ones under the age of two who are on decidedly different sleep schedules and two parents who've not had a "normal" night's sleep in seven weeks it was looking a bit dicey for anything more than a kiss over the head of a needy toddler begging for "Mommy up! Up! Daddy up!" (which means, somebody pick me up now!).

With the help of some sweet friends we were able to ship off our night owl for a few hours and sneak in some grown up time after Bennett was put to bed. (Thank you Clint and Lisa!) We enjoyed a lovely, candle lit Italian dinner of homemade foccacia dipped in olive oil, a glass of red wine and pepperoni rolls from our favorite local pizza joint.

And the pizza rolls were good, my friends.

Dessert was melted chocolate and every dip-able food we could find. Strawberries, apples, pretzels and marshmallows made the list. You know you can't go wrong with a bowl full of melted chocolate. I could probably eat my chair if it were dipped in chocolate.

We snuggled on the couch and talked and talked with no interruptions. It reminded me of the summer we fell in love. We spent many nights sitting together, talking about everything and nothing all at once as the windows changed from black to gray to blue and we had to pause our conversation to go to morning classes.

Nine years later I still love to sit with him, hear his dreams, see his heart and recognize again that the more I learn about him, the more I love him. It was like were those two kids in Waco all over again. And then we realized our friends might want us to retrieve our daughter sometime before the sun rose.

It was a wonderful evening. No crowded restaurants, no pressure to plan the best date of the year, very little money spent.

Just time with my favorite guy, doing what we enjoy most...being together.

With pizza rolls. And chocolate.

Oh My Word!

This sweet child of mine...when did he become such a big boy? In the last month or two Bennett has started talking up a storm. I've composed dozens of blog posts in my head about the cute new things he is saying but not two days later what had impressed me so much is old news and he's on to something new. I swear he has been adding two or three words to his vocabulary every day.

I know this is a completely normal and expected developmental stage so I shouldn't get so excited about it. But it is really thrilling to me to get insight into how his little brain is working and learning. As he begins to verbalize more I've been amazed again and again at what he notices and understands. It is interesting to realize some things that he's probably been processing for a long time that he's just now able to put into words. And what a joy to be able to communicate more with my boy!

A few of the interesting and/or funny things I want to remember from this stage:

* For some reason he latched on to the number "two". He points out when he has two items or sees two similar objects (cups, balls, etc.) with accuracy. But if we ever ask a question about "how many" his answer is always two.

* One day we were playing on my bed. I was counting to three, he'd jump into a pile of pillows and we'd both exclaim "kaboom!". Then he started just yelling "TWO!" and launching himself into the pillows.

* He has begun indicating that he is tired of something (toy, book, drink, snack) by saying firmly "NO! Too." (or is it "no, two"?) and tossing down the object that has begun to bore him.

* A couple of weeks ago a lot of his new words were adjectives. Suddenly he was describing everything - heavy, tall, loud, cold, messy, big, high. It occurs to me that he hasn't so much latched on to small, quiet, short or little...I guess things that fit those descriptions don't make quite the same impression on a little boy. Yesterday he pointed to a man at the park and said, "tall!". And he was right.

* Upon visiting Jeff's office and being greeted by a number of people he's not very familiar with, Bennett buried his head in my should and declared, "I shy." He now tells me he's shy any time he's feeling a little uncomfortable around new people. So sweet!

* One word I'm so glad he's finally learned is "help". But now he has begun requesting "Daddy help" sometimes when Mommy has said no.

* I love seeing how he attempts to relate stories with the words that he has. Last week he wanted to play with his t-ball set ("ball hit") but it was cold and rainy so I took him outside to show him that everything was wet. When Jeff got home Bennett told him "Ball hit. Ow-shide. Wet. Wain!"

* "Shelf" is how he tells us he wanted to do something by himself.

* Car rides are now running conversations about all the things he sees - some favorites are "dawg", "big tuck", bus, "baboon" (balloon), "boo boo" (bird) and "tane" (crane). He will sometimes get fixated on one thing he sees and once it is out of sight will wonder aloud "air tuck doe?" (where truck go?) over and over. And over. Then he'll answer himself. "Tuck bye bye. Away."

* He LOVES to "shoot" on his little basketball goal upstairs and usually wants company so he'll request "Mommy shoot" or "Daddy shoot". When he misses he'll often say "Ohhh, ty!" which I think comes from our encouragement of "good try". And when he makes a basket he'll exclaim "Shop!" (maybe because we often say "good shot"?).

* Almost nothing in the world will get him more pumped up than the promise of a "bubble bat". He'll laugh and cheer and run upstairs for the bathtub. We have to be careful not to say bath out loud if we are not planning to have him splashing away in under three minutes.

* Words that begin with hard Cs are pronounced with a T. So our friends Cobb and Charly are "Tobb" and "Ta-ee".

* Lately when I go check on him because he's being too quiet he's usually, "Ree-ing. Shelf." I love to watch him sit down and go through book after book, pointing out things he knows, making animal sounds and searching for his favorite pages, sometimes even making silly noises or voices that we use when reading to him.

* He's using sentences more and more. It is common to hear "I wan wide bike now" or "I nee Mommy help" these days.

There are so many of these priceless moments I want to freeze so I can revisit and experience the joy and wonder all over again with this sweet child that is growing up a little every day. I hate that these typed words fail to capture that little drawl that shows up in the word "dawg", the sing-song way he says "cue me" (excuse me), how his eyes light up when he sees a "pane" or "tock-a" (airplane or helicopter).

As my mother-in-law would say, it is time to start putting a rock on his head to keep him from growing.

Anybody have a big rock handy? I could use one right about now.

Yee-Haw, Y'all

A couple weeks ago Jeff and I took the kids to Fort Worth to participate in the fabulous Cowtown tradition that is the annual Stock Show and Rodeo.

Still figuring out this parenting of two under two and wanting to be prepared, I packed our car with more stuff for a day trip to the other side of the Metroplex than Jeff and I took on a month long trip to Europe. I'm not kidding.

Armed to the teeth with diapers, wipes, snacks, books, sippy cups and extra clothes, we picked up Gran and headed out with a four week old baby and a 22 month old that had only napped for 20 minutes. Some might call us crazy, but I prefer "optimistic".

My optimism was nearly shattered and I feared our outing was destined to failure when not two minutes after we arrived Bennett was terrified by a cow walking by and had a total melt down.

For those who might not be familiar, stock show = lots of cows. And bulls and horses and other large, stinky animals.

But he recovered quickly was soon mooing loudly in greeting to each and every bovine. He enjoyed the animals but did not so much enjoy riding in the stroller. So Jeff got quite a workout carrying and chasing the child all day.

I carried Dayton in a Moby Wrap which was quite comfortable except for the fact that it was 80 degrees outside and we both got hot quickly. I had a nice Dayton-shaped sweat print on my chest in no time. She started out the day dolled up in jeans and even tiny boots but soon was stripped down to just her onesie to stave off heat stroke.

I am sad we didn't get a picture or two of Little Miss in her cowgirl get-up. She was pretty cute. You'll just have to take my word on that.

Here are a few pictures from our Cowtown adventure.

Gran found this red hat at her house. It was a little small, but we made it work.

Bennett's initial reaction to the cows.

"Keep those things away from me!"

View from the rodeo floor.

This rooster was totally giving me a dirty look. I think he wanted to peck my eyes out.

Stopping for a snack break. Bennett was not fooled when I offered him raisins and animal crackers but had a piping hot funnel cake for myself.

Hey there, cowgirl!

B also preferred Daddy's frozen strawberry limeade to his watered down juice. I think he's on to me.

Bennett loved the bubble station.

Notice the bucket of incredible grimy bubble solution and the way my child places the bubble wand directly on his lips. Yucky!

The Fort Worth Stock Show usually equals cold, rainy (or icy) weather. But we lucked out with a gorgeous day.

Petting goats in the kids area.

A helpful, informational sign outside the petting zoo.

Llamas!

I thought this furry guy was pretty cute.

But underbite llama was my favorite by far.

Our lone ranger, headed back to the car.

And finally, one tired little cowboy, rubbing ecoli and who knows what else into his eyes.

Who knew cereal boxes made such fabulous hats?

I love just love this kid.

Guess What I Have

Three new blog posts! Get 'em while they're hot!

An apology and a promise

Our first outing

Pictures of Dayton at one week

I realize that a rational place to start would have been with Dayton's birth story. I really will get around to that eventually.

It is going to take me a while to get it all down in a format I am happy with. Not only did a lot happen that I want to record, but I'm still a little emotional about it all, plus there are lots of beautiful pictures I want to include. And y'all know that brevity is not my strength.

I can't even say "I'll get around to writing a birth story soon" in less that three paragraphs!

It will come eventually though. Short version = long labor (again), not successful in going unmedicated (again), sad about that but healthy baby and healthy mommy.

Sweet Pictures

While my mom stayed with us after Dayton's birth we attempted a little home photo shoot. I really need to spend some more time with my camera manual, I still have a LOT to learn. I'll get to that some day...

But until then we do the best with what we have. When you have such sweet subjects it is hard not to get a couple of cute shots.

(It's kind of driving me crazy that I haven't gotten a chance to edit these at all. I'm sure if I spent some quality time with Photoshop we'd have some really great ones. But at this point I'm just happy to have gotten them onto the computer. I must pace myself.)

In order to get a couple that I'm somewhat happy with, we got a lot of these:

I actually like this last one. She's pretty adorable even while throwing a fit, don't you think?

p.s. Can anyone tell me why I have to manually shrink each picture so much in Blogger for them to show up without being cut in half? And why my pictures are not being imported in order? How can I change my layout to allow larger pictures? Are there other (better/easier) ways to format my posts besides doing it through Blogger? It seems there has got to be a better way...this is taking me forever!

Out and About

I was worried that having a baby in the middle of winter would mean I couldn't (or rather, shouldn't) leave the house for a month or two. Chilly weather, wind, cold/flu/RSV season are not fun things for an infant.

Fortunately, we live in Texas! Dayton was not but six days old before we were able to enjoy a lovely Saturday morning by taking a walk to the park. Nanny and cousin Haley were in town to help us out. Bennett wore Haley out before we even got there by using one of his new words - run! - over and over as she pushed his stroller.

Dayton enjoyed her ride in the sling. This girl is a snuggle bug for sure and is pretty much a happy camper if she is being held. As long as the holder is walking, bouncing or swaying that is.

I sat on a bench, chatted with my dear mother in law and made goo-goo eyes at my baby girl while Jeff entertained Bennett and Haley by chasing them up and down the play equipment, helping them across monkey bars and pushing them on the swings.

Bennett now wants to ride on the big swings and does a great job of holding on like a big boy. The only problem is he has a bad habit of not notifying us when he decides he is finished with the ride. He simply disembarks mid-swing. This tends to leave us with a crying toddler who is confused as to why he ended up face down in the dirt. Sweet boy just doesn't quite understand his limits.

I might have pushed myself a bit much for a woman that had birthed a nine pound baby less than a week before, but I enjoyed getting out and about. The residual soreness was totally worth it.

I think all the excitement wore Dayton out too. Could she be any cuter?

Here We Go Again

I am actually sitting down at the "big" computer in our study in an attempt to achieve the goal of having at least some current, if not interesting, material on ye old Learning As We Go (and lemme tell ya, that is appropriate domain name if I've ever seen one).

I apologize for my sad attempts at blog updates of late. Despite the zillion and one posts in my head I've not felt capable of stringing together more than two coherent sentences, much less had the fortitude to upload pictures, compose, edit and and publish an entire blog entry.

But today has been a banner day, so I am feeling hopeful that I might have some success in finishing a post. Or maybe even two or three!

Why do I feel so empowered, you may ask? Well, not only did I not take a nap, nor feel like I might die without one today, but I made a quite successful trip to the grocery store with two children under the age of two in tow. All by myself.

I didn't even cry when I discovered my wallet was not with me as I stood in line with an overflowing basket and cranky toddler. We survived. And I had the groceries put away before my dear husband returned from work. It was enough for me to consider changing my name to Wonder Woman.

So, feeling bolstered by my recent success, tonight I will attempt to share some of the excitement and joy of our last few weeks. And next time I go to the store, I'll just bring my diaper bag AND my purse and not worry myself with trying to consolidate.

I don't expect that this will be particularly spellbinding for any dear readers that may have hung on through our recent blog slump. But there are certainly moments and memories that I want to capture at least for myself before the vivid colors and emotions begin to dim with the passage of time.

So, hold on to your hats, my friends. Here we go!
